dc.description.abstractLooking for Sustainable Development, recently, sorne topics are being given importan ce as ways of achieving sustainability, one of those, the Family Farming. This research, addresses that type of agriculture, with the vision suggested by the Sustainable Rural Development within a Territorial Approach, focusing on the Rural Agribusiness for the production of dulce or panela (raw sugar) in the community of La Paz, San Ramón, Alajuela, Costa Rica. Therefore it analyzes the different dimensions (social, economic, environmental and policy-institutional) of sustainability. The aim of this study is to identify factors, in the family agribusiness cha in of dulce, affecting the Sustainable Rural Development of the community, in order to propase alternatives to improve the sustainability of the agribusiness cha in in the territory For the development of this research, the Global Commodity Cha in approach- methodology was used, which allowed identifying the different stages in the cha in and to analyze in each of them the dimensions of sustainability mentioned above. We interviewed producers of ca ne sugar, mills owners, brokers/dealers, consumers and institutions linked to the activity of the dulce in the a rea, also field visits to farms and direct observation were done. lt was found that the agribusiness is generating 131 direct jobs (11 women), most are family labor. The a rea has sorne productive autonomy (although depend directly on the market of dulce), there are around 15 varieties of sugarcane, there is an important use of organic products anda lot of interest in implementing this and other environment-friendly practices.
