Resumen
Climate change produced by anthropogenic activity has been identified as one of the biggest challenges facing governments, companies and people today. In response, the international initiatives are being developed to mitigate greenhouse gases (GHGs) in the atmosphere. The tnternational Organization for Standardization (ISO) has developed the IS0-14044:2007 standard, which it refers to the Life Cycle Analysis (LCA) approach and IS0-14067:2015, this technical specification establishes the principies, the requirements and the guidelines for the quantification and communication of the carbon footprint of a product (HCP), based on lnternational Standards on the analysis of the lite cycle for quantification (INTE /ISO 14040 and INTE / ISO 14044). The company Energías Biodegradables from Costa Rica produces biodiesel from waste oils. Four fundamental stages stand out in the production process: thermal pre-treatment, esterification, transesterification and purification. The biodiesel is used in an average mixture of BlO in public transport buses that owned by the company Consorcio Operativo del Este S.A . (COESA). The final result is the carbon footprint expressed as numerical indicator that contemplates the total GHG (kg CO2eq), divided by the amount of liters of biodiesel produced annually. Table 1 shows the annual carbon footprint expressed in (kg CO2 eq/L). Tablel.- Carbon footprint reported in kg CO2e / L biodiesel. When it is comparing the average of the three periods of the carbon footprint of biodiesel (0.18 kg CO2e/L) with the carbon footprint of diesel reported theoretically by the European Union Directive on Renewable Energy 2009 (3.03 kg CO2e/L), lt shows that the carbon footprint of biodiesel produced into the system under study represents 6% of the carbon footprint of diesel.
