Strategies to work with authentic listening materials in a high-intermediate english as a foreign language class

The general objective of this teaching practicum is to determine the benefits of the use of five strategies with authentic listening materials in the listening comprehension of a group of students at a high intermediate English level. Specifically, the selected listening strategies are activating information related to cognitive structures, addressing attention to intonation patterns, using and contextualizing new language, paraphrasing to confirm the new knowledge and valuating the information according to the relevance of the message. These strategies were applied in various written exercises throughout a conversational course. The authentic listening materials were classified according to their listening objective: curious eavesdropping, extraction of information, enjoyment, completion of a task, understanding of concepts and information, and inference of views and attitudes.
