Collection management is a very important process in libraries mainly for the great amount of infonnation available in the market and the insufficient budget of these institutions. The University of Costa Rica has a Documentation, Information and Library System (known as SIBDI -its acronym in Spanish) formed by several libraries -located in the Rodrigo Facio University Campus and other regional campuses and sites -and in charge of the management of various collections that should be fairly administered. The Carlos Monge Alfaro Library (BCMA-its acronym in Spanish) is located in the Rodrigo Facio University Campus, and is the main building for the storage and management of several collections. This work offers an evaluation of the general book collection of this library considering the size of its sub- collections (according to Dewey's classification system) and its usability according to the registers of the OLIB (automatic system used by the SIBDI), and according to a users study applied to several students and professors selected from all the academic areas included in the collections managed by the BCMA. Based on this evaluation, the Manual for the evaluation of book collections of the SIBDI libraries is created as a tool designed to be replicated in other book collections of the SIBDI, according to the experience at the BCMA and to the fact that, as part of the same system, all libraries shared similar characteristics. Some of the results of the evaluation applied to the BCMA include the need for the updating of the collections, the dissatisfaction of users in relation to the infonnation found in books, and a limited usability of books if considering the large number of samples stored by the BCMA.
