Resumen
The superfamily Eriophyoidea is the second in economic importance as mite pests in crops, with more than 4000 species currently described. Additionally, some species have been used successfully in the biological control of some weeds due partly to their high specificity and the type of damage that they cause to their hosts. The aim of this research was to identify eriophyid mites as potential biocontrol agents of weeds associated with banana farms. These plants were sampled within banana plantations and neighboring areas (alternate ecosystems) during 2008 and 2009. We visited 19 banana farms and 12 alternate ecosystems in which a total of 829 samples of plants was collected and processed, 591 of which were collected from banana plantations. 70 species of plants belonging to 28 botanical families were represented in the total of samples. The extraction of mites specimens was made directly or through the use of sieves. Eriophyoid mites were found on 20% of the species (representing 12 botanical families), most of them were leaf vagrants and few were gall forming mites. 19 eriophyid-host findings are reported in this document, 17 of them correspond to samples collected out of the banana plantations and in some cases more than one taxa of this superfamily was found on the same host. For the identification of these mites, microscope slides for phase contrast light microscopy and samples for scanning electron microscopy (when there was a high number of mites) were prepared. According to the available literature and the expertise of specialists, we identified specimens near or belonging to four genera in the family Eriophyidae (Acaphyllisa, Aceria, Dichopelmus and Vittacus) and three for the family Diptilomiopidae (Asetadiptacus, Diptiloplatus and Rhynacus). In six cases we could not determine the genus properly and in two additional cases we could not define the family of the specimens. The variety of...
